- Windows are a very ancient invention. These can be seen represented in early wall paintings in Egypt. The Egyptian examples show window openings covered in matting.
- The Roman Egyptians were the first people known to have used glass for windows and they would have been extremely thick and almost impossible to see through. Glass was an expensive material and the technology was very basic which made it a material used for windows only by the very wealthy in their homes or in public buildings. In the middle ages not even wealthy people had glass windows.
- In England pre sixteenth century most windows were just unglazed openings and before glass, windows were commonly just covered with cloth, rags, animal skins, or paper.
- In the late 1600’s glass windows were considered a luxury, and even the wealthiest only had glass windows in their most important rooms.
- Glass windows became common in homes in the early seventeenth century. This was when the sash window was introduced, sash windows evolved over the eighteenth century as the window size became more standardised

Obsidian, this is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock, Felsic lava cools rapidly to form a glassy dark black substance and because of it’s rapid cooling it forms without crystallization. It was known to have been used to make spearheads and later arrowheads and many other tools and weapons. Once discovered it very quickly because the go to raw material to produce sharp objects and this natural glass has been used throughout history.
